- DeepMind's AlphaZero, introduced in late 2017 and fully evaluated in Science in December 2018, a single system that taught itself chess, shogi and Go from random play through self-play reinforcement learning, given only the rules, with a deep neural network guiding Monte Carlo tree search; after about 9 hours of training for chess, 12 for shogi and 13 days for Go, it beat the leading programs Stockfish (155 wins and 6 losses in 1,000 games), Elmo (91.2% of games) and AlphaGo Zero (61%).
