- OpenAI's InstructGPT models, announced January 27, 2022 and described in a March 2022 paper: GPT-3 fine-tuned with humans in the loop, first on labeler demonstrations and then with reinforcement learning from human feedback on ranked outputs, to follow user intentions far better while being more truthful and less toxic; labelers preferred the 1.3B InstructGPT model's outputs to 175B GPT-3's despite 100x fewer parameters. They became the API's default models, though they still made up facts.
