- OpenAI's GPT-3, an autoregressive language model with 175 billion parameters, 10x more than any previous non-sparse language model, introduced in a May 2020 paper showing that scaling greatly improves few-shot performance: given a few examples and no fine-tuning, it handled translation, question answering, cloze tasks and on-the-fly reasoning, and wrote news articles evaluators struggled to tell from human ones. OpenAI's API, launched in private beta on June 11, 2020, ran GPT-3-family models.
